Despite being archaic ways to get genuine and delicious coffee, they are methods that are not at all in disuse today, enjoying great popularity among many consumers of this brew.

To clarify many details about these two coffee machines, we will evaluate them based on certain characteristics that we will comment on in detail :

  1. Appearance, Construction, and Materials
  2. French press
  3. Parts of a french press

Although the French Press (also called ” Plunger Coffee Maker “) in some cases is more associated with the consumption of Teas, Rooibos, and other vegetable infusions, the truth is that it is also commonly used for the extraction of coffee.

Its appearance is similar to that of a jug, generally made of glass or borosilicate, covered with a frame of Stainless Steel, Copper, or Aluminum, and which has a plunger inside with a filter, which separates the infusion from the product to be infused.

With a more traditional design, the French Press is a great option for preparing coffee for guests, due to its elegant design and its large capacity.

Moka Coffee Maker or Drip Coffee Maker

The  Moka Coffee Maker is the typical one that responds to the classic image of a manual drip coffee maker that has always been used in most homes. The coffee maker consists of 3 fundamental parts which are available in our previous post.

  • What type of extraction do you perform?

In this regard, both coffee machines use two different types of extraction. While the French Press uses the system of extraction by immersion, the Moka Coffee Maker does it by dripping. The drip extraction produces a more intense result, reducing the amount of water per amount of coffee if we compare it with the French Press.

  • Which is faster?

When analyzing the speed of both coffee machines, we have to opt for the Moka Coffee Machine. When you introduce hot water into your tank, it is a matter of a few seconds before the coffee begins to flow. The French Press in this regard will need a higher time range, between 5 and 10 minutes approximately.

  • Which has more capacity?

In this case, there is no doubt either; the French Press wins by a landslide. Many of the French Presses have a jug of between 350 ml. up to 1500 ml ., the most common being 600 ml (6 cups). and those of 1000 ml (10 cups). The French Press has the particularity that it allows us to prepare the amount of coffee we want.

On the contrary, Moka Coffee Makers usually have a maximum capacity of 450 ml. , although 300 ml. they are usually the most used. The problem with this type of coffee maker is that we cannot choose the quantity, since for a correct extraction we always have to use the quantity of coffee and water available in each model.

  • Which is easier to clean?

In this regard, we opted for the Moka Coffee Maker. Its ease of disassembly for cleaning is comparatively simpler than that of the French Press. In addition, the Moka has fewer and more rigid parts that will allow us to perform a quick cleaning in a few seconds.

The french press, despite being more aesthetically attractive, has pieces that are somewhat more delicate to handle. In addition, the number of pieces and their order at the time of assembly can cause us a small headache, at least, until we get used to it. On the other hand, it is somewhat more difficult to get rid of the coffee remains in the French Press.

  • Portability

At this point, we will also comment that due to the details that we have discussed in this section, the Moka Coffee Maker also gains in portability, since its compact design and its materials make it easy to move with it without fear of breaking or damaging it.

  • Easy to use

Here we could say that there is a technical tie. Both types of extraction are quite simple and do not require special knowledge of the coffee maker. We could understand that the   Moka Coffee Maker may show easier (less laborious) since it already has the pre-established measurements, which saves us the problem of measuring the amounts of water and coffee that can be required in the French Press.

  • Versatility

In this section, we can consider that the French Press is more versatile since it can be used for a greater variety of tasks. In addition to working as a coffee maker, it is commonly used to prepare other infusions, and even to froth milk.

In addition, as we have commented previously, the French Press does not require a specific measure, and we can prepare both a single cup and the maximum of its capacity.

This does not happen with the   Moka Coffee Maker, which can only prepare the specific amount that it offers us. No more no less. For someone who consumes a fixed amount each day, however, it can be a great alternative.

Conclusion

The two types of coffee makers have their advantages, but if you are a lover of the taste of coffee, French coffee makers will offer you a better range of flavors. Moka coffee makers, if you prepare your coffee well, are also an interesting option to get a good taste.

If you prefer to have your coffee freshly brewed in the morning, a drip coffee maker is the most suitable, or if you normally prepare many cups of coffee for family or friends. There are great Moka coffee makers. Keep that in mind.
